If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.

Artist Statement
Color and light speak to me in many subtle and significant ways and effect how I see the world. I am influenced by color and light in my moods, emotions, and well being. My paintings are an attempt at describing my my experience with color and light - be it direct or indirect, illuminating an object, allowing for shadow and contrast - even absence of color. My work is inspired by my immediate surroundings, by the beauty I observe in my immediate environment or the places I visit, whether on city streets, or in the wilderness, at the edge of the ocean, in a weathered industrial building or well-designed public space. My paintings rarely represent reality, are fashioned from memory and imagination; multiple meanings are possible, as well as ambiguous emotions. Often using structural elements when developing content and composition, I feel I have succeeded when my audience engages with a specific piece and finds a connection to their own experience.
Born and raised in Germany, I lived in Munich for most of my life, before moving to San Francisco in 1997. Influenced by a vibrant art community, by the intense California light, and my desire to find a creative outlet, I took classes at the SFSU and UC Berkeley to study drawing and painting. I now make sure I have an almost daily art practice spent in my studio painting. When I am out and about I have my camera with me. Most of these photos were taken in a communal garden in Spring and Summer of 2010.
